Data Engineer

Hybrid · New York City, NY

About This Role

Aligned Marketplace is a mission-driven B2B2C company transforming how self-insured employers connect their plan members to advanced primary care. Our platform helps employers reduce healthcare costs by up to 15% while improving outcomes for high-risk members. We do this by aligning incentives across employers, members, and providers. Employers save money, members get faster access to better care, and providers are paid to deliver the kind of care they want to practice.

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to build, scale, and own the data infrastructure that powers Aligned’s marketplace. This role is for an engineer who enjoys writing production Python, designing and operating robust ETL pipelines, and crafting complex SQL logic to turn high-volume healthcare data into reliable foundations for products, analytics, and operations.

A unique opportunity: We have already invested heavily in modern data tooling including Snowflake, Dagster, and dbt. As we expand our application layer and deepen integrations with healthcare data sources, this role will be central to shaping how data flows through the platform, from ingestion and transformation to modeling and powering product features and decision-making.

You’ll join a small, collaborative technical team with significant autonomy and ownership. If you’re energized by building high-quality data systems that directly impact patient outcomes, provider payments, and employer decisions, this role offers a meaningful opportunity to make an impact.

What You’ll Do

  • Take ownership of data systems that are directly tied to member access, provider payments, and clinical outcomes.
  • Design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines using tools like Dagster, dbt, and Snowflake
  • Develop and maintain complex SQL transformations and business logic for high-volume healthcare data
  • Write clean, well-tested Python code to support data ingestion, transformations, validations, and integrations
  • Ingest, normalize, and model data from diverse healthcare and operational data sources
  • Design scalable, well-documented data models that support analytics, product features, and reporting
  • Partner with software engineers to define clean interfaces between application systems and the data platform
  • Optimize data performance and reliability, including query optimization, partitioning, and cost-aware design
  • Implement data quality checks, monitoring, and alerting to ensure accuracy and trust in critical datasets
  • Support HIPAA-compliant handling of sensitive healthcare data, including access controls and auditability
  • Take ownership of data projects end-to-end, from requirements through production deployment
  • Collaborate closely with product, analytics, and engineering teammates to enable new capabilities
  • Continuously improve data engineering standards, tooling, and best practices across the organization

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of professional experience in data engineering
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with relational data modeling
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including experience writing maintainable, production-quality code
  • Hands-on experience with modern data warehouses, Snowflake preferred
  • Experience building and maintaining production data pipelines and services
  • Familiarity with orchestration frameworks such as Dagster, Airflow, or similar
  • Comfort collaborating in a codebase with backend engineers, including code reviews and shared standards
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data correctness and reliability
  • Ability to work independently in ambiguous problem spaces
  • NYC-based or able to commute 2–3 days per week

Bonus Points For

  • Previous experience in health tech or healthcare data systems
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines
  • Exposure to startup environments

What You Will Actually Build

In addition to owning the core data platform, you will work on tangible, high impact problems that sit directly at the intersection of data, product, and healthcare operations, including:

  • Member to provider data delivery: Build and operate systems that move member data to doctors’ offices quickly and reliably so members can actually be seen. This includes ingesting member data, normalizing it, transmitting it safely via multiple delivery mechanisms, monitoring transfers end to end, and keeping records in sync across systems.
  • Patient identity and record integrity: Help design and maintain an EMPI-like patient mastering layer. Avoid creating people too early from weak identifiers. Detect and resolve fragmentation when better data arrives. Ensure records merge correctly instead of churning into accidental duplicates that break member experiences and provider workflows.
  • Data quality as a first class product feature: Build monitoring and alerting that ensures members can authenticate, schedule, and see a doctor without friction. When data quality issues occur, they are visible, diagnosable, and fixable rather than silent failures.
  • Risk measurement and member prioritization: Model and measure member risk so the company can proactively engage members who need care the most. Your work will directly influence which members get outreach, care coordination, and faster access to providers.

Why Aligned Marketplace

  • Mission with impact: We’re helping millions of Americans access high-quality, affordable care.
  • Small team, big leverage: Every engineer plays a visible and strategic role in our success.
  • Culture of trust and balance: We value hard work and high standards, but also rest and family.
  • Strong foundation: Backed by $8M in funding with a growing network of high-performing providers and employers.
  • Shape the future: Join at a pivotal moment to help define our technical architecture and engineering culture.

Our Engineering Values
